Universities and other higher education institutions have been regarded as key sources of knowledge exploitable in economic development. Apart from traditional functions of universities – teaching and conducting research – commercialisation and transfer activities are gaining more important role. Universities are expected to play the "third role" by contributing more intensively towards the development of their surroundings. Furthermore, as knowledge becomes an increasingly vital part of regional innovation and development processes, the role of universities has come to the fore of regional innovation and economic development policy.

This conference meets the growing interest in the role of universities and their interactions with their social, economic and cultural environments. It will focus on three major topics:

  • the role of universities in production of knowledge and innovations,
  • the interplay between the place (the city and the region) and the university,
  • the internationalisation urban policies and university management.

These topics will be discussed in more general frameworks of internationalisation, urban policies and university management.

The conference is organised by the EUROREG University of  Warsaw and UNICA - Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe within the framework of Polish Presidency in the European Union. The event is held under the patronage of Elżbieta E. Bieńkowska, the Minister of Regional Development, Barbara Kudrycka, the Minister of Science and Higher Education and Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the Mayor of Warsaw. The conference is co-financed by the University of Warsaw, the Ministry for Regional Development, UNICA and the City of Warsaw. The conference is free of charge for participants.
