Warsaw is the capital of Poland and region of Mazowieckie. Its population reaches 2 Mio people. Warsaw MEGA (over 3 mio people strong) is the best developed and most dynamic development centre of Poland (with the GDP pc well over 100% of the EU average). According to the newest "European City Monitor" it is the 18th most attractive European city. It is surrounded by Poland's largest region (5 mio inhabitants incl. Warsaw). Warsaw has undergone successful economic restructuring in the 90. and nowadays has a modern, service-oriented economic base. It is a lively cultural and academic centre with more than 250,000 students. Over 60,000 of them study at the University of Warsaw (in numerous locations throughout the city). University of Warsaw (est. 1817) takes first place among Poland's universities and contributes to development of the region and international research co-operation.

University of Warsaw main campus is located in the historical centre of the city, walking distance from the Royal Castle, the Old Town (on UNESCO list of World Cultural Heredity) and many other historical sites, Opera, theatres, museums, restaurants etc. Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street forms part of the touristic 10 km long Royal Route linking the Royal Castle with numerous palaces and rich burgher houses stretching along Nowy Swiat and  Ujazdowskie streets, with most striking Lazienki park and palace, Belveder palace and - finally - the baroque Royal Palace of Wilanow.

The main University campus consists of three palaces (including the Royal Kazimierzowski Palace, now a rectorate) and number of other historical buildings mostly in classical style. Its focal point is Old Library building where the conference takes place. Map of main campus is available on the University website: www.uw.edu.pl/strony/map1/zoom1.html. Old Library marked #10, Rectorate #1, EUROREG #31.
